The Duality of Chai & Lavender

Lately, I’ve been a little obsessed with this herbal blend—this beautiful oxymoron of a beverage. It’s a hybrid, really. Like indica meets sativa.

It began with a cocktail called The Astronomer at DOGON, Chef Kwame’s stunning restaurant inside The Salamander in D.C. It was a mix of house-made masala chai, lavender, African gin, a frothy top (probably egg white), and a lavender bud garnish. Hands down, one of the best cocktails I’ve ever had! The fact that it was named The Astronomer—right up my esoteric alley—only made it more magical. But seriously, it was also a good feeling.

I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so the next day, I wandered into PLUM Café and ordered a hot dirty chai with lavender coffee. And just like that, I was deep into the duality of it all.

The irony tickles me: chai is a caffeinated spice blend that wakes you up and sharpens the mind. Lavender, on the other hand, soothes the spirit and invites calm. Both come in warm, comforting form—but bring such opposing energies. Yet, hella grounding.

Honestly? This blend is me. I’m often chasing equilibrium. Balance. Living between extremes—either totally obsessed or dismissive. Unwaveringly grounded, yet non-committal. Culturally,  a walking juxtaposition. And how I handle conflict?  I want to hear every side, really sit in the in-between, exploring the contradictions and commonalities. Until I find my own resonance, make my decision, or choose to remain entirely indifferent.

It’s funny how herbal and spice notes can mirror so much. Now that I sip tea three times a day, the experiences are endless.

Next on my list? An iced chai with lavender tea and a splash of lemonade. Because, of course. Balance—with all life has given me.

Sidenote: I really really wanted to name this post Duali-tea. Le sigh.
